Florida PIP Insurance &

Chiropractic Care — What You Need to Know

After a car accident in Florida, your PIP (Personal Injury Protection) insurance is your first line of coverage for medical expenses — including chiropractic care. Understanding how PIP works, what it covers, and the critical 14-day deadline can make the difference between a fully covered recovery and out-of-pocket costs. Freedom Chiropractic in Delray Beach and Pompano Beach accepts PIP insurance and can evaluate you the same day as your accident. Call (561) 808-7388.

How Florida PIP Insurance Works

Florida is one of a small number of no-fault insurance states. Under Florida's no-fault law, your own auto insurance policy's PIP coverage pays for your medical expenses regardless of who caused the accident — up to the policy limit. This removes the need to immediately establish fault to receive medical care.

Coverage amounts: Florida requires a minimum of $10,000 in PIP coverage. However, the amount accessible depends on whether your provider documents an Emergency Medical Condition (EMC):

  • Emergency Medical Condition (EMC): Full $10,000 available at 80% of reasonable charges
  • Non-Emergency Condition: Only $2,500 available

This is why your initial evaluation matters enormously. A chiropractor, physician, physician assistant, or ARNP can determine whether your condition qualifies as an EMC. Freedom Chiropractic provides this evaluation and documents your condition status accurately and thoroughly.

The 14-Day Rule — Do Not Wait

Florida Statute 627.736 requires that accident victims seek initial medical treatment within 14 days of the accident to be eligible for PIP benefits. This is an absolute deadline — missing it means your PIP insurer has no legal obligation to cover your treatment costs, regardless of whether your injuries are real.

Many patients delay because they don't feel severely injured immediately after the crash. This is common and dangerous. The adrenaline response to trauma temporarily masks pain. Inflammation and swelling — particularly in the cervical spine after whiplash — can take 24–72 hours to fully develop. By the time patients feel their worst, they've sometimes already missed valuable treatment time and, in some cases, the 14-day window.

What to do immediately after a car accident in Florida:

1. Call police and document the scene
2. Exchange insurance information
3. Seek medical evaluation within 14 days — sooner is always better
4. Do not give a recorded statement to any insurance adjuster before being evaluated
5. Contact a personal injury attorney if you believe the other driver was at fault
